Frequently asked questions
How far is Royal Dornoch from Edinburgh?
Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours by car. Flying into Inverness (1 hour from Edinburgh) and driving 60 minutes north is the more practical approach for a dedicated Highland trip.
Is Castle Stuart (Cabot Highlands) worth visiting?
Yes. It is one of the finest modern links courses in Scotland, with a spectacular Moray Firth setting and excellent facilities. First-timers should consider hiring a caddie — the walk is tough and local knowledge improves the experience considerably.
Can I visit Royal Dornoch as a day trip from Inverness?
Technically yes — it is about 60 minutes north. But Royal Dornoch and the town of Dornoch deserve more time than a rushed day trip allows. Staying the night gives you a second-round option and lets the place properly sink in.
What other Highland courses can I add to this trip?
Moray Old in Lossiemouth is an excellent addition at similar standard to Nairn Dunbar. Tain, just south of Dornoch, is a traditional links with strong turf. Nairn Dunbar works perfectly as a second-round option after Nairn if the group wants 36 holes on day one.
