I'm a member here, and Nairn is the course I'd point to first when people assume the Highlands only means Royal Dornoch. The front nine runs almost entirely along the Moray Firth, hole after hole with the water right there, and it's some of the most exposed, honest links golf in the country. The back nine turns inland, a different character entirely, before the course gathers itself again toward the finish. The 14th is the hole to play for. A downhill par 3 looking straight out over the Moray Firth, it's the kind of view that makes you forget you're mid-round. Play it in a summer evening, when the light runs long and the wind tends to soften, and it's hard to beat anywhere in Scotland. What sets Nairn apart isn't just the golf. The club itself is genuinely friendly, properly traditional without being precious about it, and the Bothy is not to be skipped, a tiny halfway house next to the old building once used to store fish through the winter, back when the cold did the job a freezer does now. This is a course that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as its more famous Highland neighbours, and rarely is.
